20 years ago today I was sitting in a classroom watching the television. My teacher was going on about the historical significance of that day's space shuttle launch, there was a teacher on board the shuttle. The first civilian to go into space.
We were sitting there watching the shuttle lift off, live. We were stunned into silence as the shuttle erupted into a large cloud of destruction. Two tendrils of smoke propelled themselves off into two different directions. Our first thought was that it was fake, that someone out there was playing a cruel practical joke. One of the kids in my class said that it couldn't have blown up, there was a teacher on there. I guess some part of us thought that teachers were indestructible or something.
But it was true, the seven on board the shuttle were lost.
I opened the door, trying not to seem to panicked, and I asked the officer standing there what was wrong?
He was looking for someone who had lived on this side of the complex about a year ago. A blonde woman with a pony tail who owned a dog was the only description he could offer. I told him we were the only folks that owned a dog, and other than a family that had just moved in a month or so ago, we were the only white family. He smiled sadly, apologized for ringing the bell so early in the morning, he told me he wouldn't have only it was a matter of a family emergency. I smiled, told him it was alright because he really did look like he was sorry for waking us. Perhaps because having to be the one who rings the doorbell at 5:00am to tell someone about a family emergency isn't exactly an easy thing to do. I hope that he manages to find the person he's looking for.
Meanwhile, the doorbell is just outside of LB's room. Which means that as I climbed the stairs, hoping to crawl back into bed for a few more hours of sleep I could hear him laughing and knew it just wasn't going to happen.
Luckily he was in a mood to let me rest on the sofa for a bit. Not a great rest, but a little bit anyway.
So far today I've gotten him to eat his helping of applesauce with Tylenol mixed in (twice) and a whole bowl of oatmeal. Not a lot for him, but a much needed improvement in the diet area. I'm very excited about it.
Thanks for all the well wishes and support during this time, it really has meant a lot to me.
