I've realized that I have a real pet peeve against folks that are ridiculous and force these diets on their kids. I mean adult diet restrictions, what ever the latest fad is.
Back in the 80's I had a friend who put her kids on the low or no fat diet just like everyone else was on. Imagine her surprise when her kids were diagnosed with a developmental disorder caused by a lack of fat in their diet during the years when their bodies were growing and developing. These kids have real problems with learning disabilities, social skills as well as physical limitations. All because their Mom cut fat out of their diet when they were just over a year in age.
Now I have a friend who is cutting the carbs out of her 2 year olds diet. I have another friend that believes that Canada's food guide is a lot hokey nonsense and she feels that feeding her kids a steady fast food is fine.
Why do these people do this to their children? Can't people realize that children need a balanced diet, vegetables, fruits, breads and grains and meats as well. I try to make sure my kids eat balanced. In Dot's lunches she gets a sandwich most days, meat, cheese on whole wheat and I try to get her to have lettuce on it, but she doesn't always eat it. She also gets a carrot and a stalk of celery along with a few slices of cheese. Sometimes she doesn't like sandwiches, she takes slices of meat, cheese and crackers along with her carrot, celery and cheese. She drinks fruit juice or V8 most days. Sometimes she buys milk at school. For dessert it's Mini Go (cheese and fruit), yogurt or pudding. She also gets a Fruit to Go, which is basically just dehydrated fruit and she also gets raisins. I think she eats very healthy.
EB when he comes home gets leftovers from dinner, or I make him a sandwich, sometimes he gets something from a can. He also gets the same veggies as Dot, only sometimes instead of cheese with the celery he gets peanut butter. His drinks at lunch are fruit juices or milk. He eats pretty much the same thing as Dot most days.
I've always tried to keep my kids from becoming sugar addicts like their Mom and Dad. When they were little my Dad would show up with a pack of Smarties at least once or twice a week for the kids. I'd give them a small bowl (maybe 5 or 6 Smarties in it) and then I'd put the rest away for later. I always kept fresh fruit and veggies cut up and ready for the kids to snack on at a moments notice. If you offer my kids a pear or a chocolate bar they most times choose the pear.
When I listen to my friends go on about their kids diet I just want to grab them and shake them and make them see the light. Those kids need to eat better. More fiber, more fruits and veggies, less crap. Why can't parents see what they are doing? Maybe when your pregnant and seeing your doctor you should offer a nutrition course at the same time.
We are going to start to eat healthier as a family. Hubby and I are going to have to start to set a better example for the kids. There is far to many chocolate bars, butter tarts, chips and other not so healthy foods coming into this house on a regular basis. It has to stop. Hubby and I have decided to go on a better eating diet. Hopefully I'm able to keep Hubby on it.
