I had a whole entire entry written up, about the stupidity of youth. I
was going to write about some of the more dangerous things I'd done in my life,
all of them unbelievably dumb.
But I changed my mind. I heard about 2 separate cases today of young girls
ingesting some kind of narcotic and it just breaks my heart. I remember
when I was younger and we thought it was oh so cool to have a brush with death.
We thought taking drugs and getting drunk made you a severe rock on kind of kid.
Then a close friend had way to much to drink one night. She was found
passed out with another friend in a field by the police. My friend had to
stay in the hospital for the weekend, she'd had a severe case of alcohol
poisoning. She had almost been in a coma when they brought her in.
The other girl died.
Another time we were at a school dance and another friend had been drinking at a
house party before the dance. Half way through the night he collapsed on
the gym floor, when the vice principal bent over to see to his welfare the
friend punched the man right in the nose. He stumbled out into the hall of
the school and suddenly his face just seemed to explode, blood was flowing from
his nose and mouth. He'd been on some sort of prescription medication and
shouldn't have been drinking. He had to spend the weekend in the hospital
and for the rest of his high school career was called Bloody Ivan.
We do these things in the name of being cool, so we will fit into the crowd.
We thought we were immortal. Sure, bad things can happen if you drink, do
drugs and mix alcohol with medication. We see the movies in health class
at school. But c'mon, for every person that had a bad experience how many
had an awesome one? What were the odds that we'd be that one kid that
ended up dead?
The Immortality Illusion of Youth. They all think that they are
invincible and that they are going to live for ever. Sure it's dangerous,
but it wont happen to me. It'll happen to some other kid.
I'm not looking forward to the next stage of EB and Dot's life.
